Achitophel

Achitophel is a prominent figure in the Hebrew Bible, specifically in the books of Samuel. He is primarily known as an advisor to King David who later betrayed him. Originally a trusted counselor, Achitophel's counsel was highly valued, often compared to the wisdom of God. His turn against David coincided with the rebellion of Absalom, David's son.

Achitophel's defection was a significant blow to David. He provided Absalom with strategic advice, urging him to pursue David immediately after David fled Jerusalem. Achitophel's counsel was so potent that it swayed Absalom and his followers. However, Absalom, against Achitophel's advice, chose to consult with Hushai, a spy loyal to David. Hushai deliberately gave Absalom poor advice, which ultimately led to the defeat of Absalom's forces.

Following the failure of his plan and the defeat of Absalom, Achitophel returned to his home city. Upon realizing his schemes had failed, he went home and hanged himself. His dramatic end underscores the gravity of his betrayal and the consequences of his actions. The biblical narrative presents Achitophel as a symbol of treachery and the loss of wisdom when it is misdirected or corrupted.
