Accettante

Accettante is an Italian term that functions as both a present participle of the verb accettare and as a noun. As an adjective it can mean “that accepts” or “receiving,” and in everyday language it may describe someone who accepts proposals, terms, or gifts. In common usage the word is not highly frequent outside formal or technical writing, and in many contexts people simply say “chi accetta” instead of using accettante.

In legal and financial contexts accettante has a specialised meaning related to negotiable instruments. Specifically, in a bill of exchange (cambiale), the accettante is the drawee who, by signing the document to indicate acceptance, commits to paying the amount at maturity. The act of acceptance is known as accettazione, and once made, the accettante becomes the party obliged to fulfill the payment. This role is central to the transfer and enforceability of such instruments, and it helps distinguish between the various parties involved in commercial transactions, such as the emittente (drawer) and the accettante.

Usage notes: the term is largely confined to commercial law, banking, and related professional discourse. In everyday language it is more common to speak of a person who accepts something rather than using the noun accettante.

Etymology: accettante derives from accettare, via the suffix -ante which marks agency or involvement. The form is gendered identically (accettante) with plural accettanti.
