Accelerometer-based refers to systems and technologies that rely on accelerometers to measure linear acceleration along one or more axes. Most commonly built with microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), these sensors convert mechanical movement into electrical signals that can be interpreted by microprocessors. The data from accelerometers can indicate motion, tilt relative to gravity, vibration, or impact, depending on the configuration and processing.

In operation, an accelerometer outputs a voltage or digital value proportional to acceleration along its axes. Because gravity provides a constant reference, static tilt can be inferred from the measured gravity components. For dynamic motion, the sensor data are often combined with other measurements to estimate velocity, position, orientation, or activity. Since integrating acceleration over time can lead to drift and accumulating error, accelerometer data are typically fused with other sensors such as gyroscopes, magnetometers, GPS, or cameras using algorithms like Kalman filters or complementary filters.

Applications of accelerometer-based technology are broad. In mobile devices, they support screen orientation, gesture recognition, and step counting. Wearables use them for activity monitoring and fall detection. In automotive systems, accelerometers contribute to airbag deployment, rollover detection, and ride dynamics analysis. Robotics and drones use accelerometer data for odometry and stabilization. Structural health monitoring and industrial equipment diagnostics also rely on accelerometers to detect vibrations and abnormal motion.

Advantages include small size, low cost, low power consumption, and the ability to operate without external references. Limitations involve noise, bias and scale factor errors, cross-axis sensitivity, wind or vibration effects, and drift when relying on integration alone. Proper calibration and sensor fusion are essential for reliable performance.
