Acatenango

Acatenango is a municipality in the Guatemala Department of Guatemala, officially known as Departamento de Guatemala. It is situated in the heart of the department, about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) northeast of the capital city, Guatemala City. The name "Acatenango" meaning "where sides are cut," one of the 22 municipalities of Guatemala.

With a total area of approximately 230 square kilometers (89 square miles), Acatenango is relatively small but densely populated. The municipality's terrain consists of highlands and mountains with elevations ranging from 1,300 to 3,500 meters (4,300 to 11,500 feet) above sea level. Climatic conditions vary greatly throughout the year, with cold winters and warm summers.

Historically, Acatenango was an important center for the local population, known for its textile production and coffee plantations. The proximity to the capital city also played a significant role in the development of the local economy. Today, the municipality remains predominantly rural, with a significant portion of the population engaged in agriculture and small-scale commerce.

Acatenango is also home to various streams, babbling brooks, and the Efraín River. The region has a high level of biodiversity due to its geography and climate. Natural hazards such as landslides, earthquakes, and lahars pose significant threats to the local population and environment.

In recent years, the municipality of Acatenango has been experiencing population growth and improvements in infrastructure, contributing to the region's overall development.
