Abschwächung

Abschwächung is a German noun that denotes the process or result of becoming weaker or reducing intensity, strength, or effect. In technical contexts it describes the decrease of a signal, beam, or force as it propagates; in linguistics it refers to the softening or mitigation of a statement to reduce firmness or risk of offense.

In physics, engineering and related fields, Abschwächung refers to attenuation: the loss of amplitude or energy of a wave as it travels through a medium. This loss arises from absorption, scattering, and geometric spreading. It is often quantified by an attenuation coefficient, denoted α, or expressed in decibels per unit length (dB/m). In many media, higher frequencies experience greater attenuation, and the effect increases with distance traveled.

In optics and spectroscopy, Abschwächung describes the reduction of light intensity as it passes through matter.
