The term originates from the German words *abschätzen*, meaning "to estimate" or "to approximate," and *Methode*, meaning "method." Such techniques are widely applied in fields requiring quick, rough estimates to guide decision-making or verify results.

Estimation methods vary depending on the context. In mathematics, they may involve simplifying complex expressions or using bounds to narrow down possible values. For instance, one might approximate the value of a function by linear interpolation or by bounding it between two simpler functions. In engineering and physics, estimation techniques help predict outcomes without detailed computations, such as estimating material costs or structural loads. Scientists often rely on them to assess feasibility or identify potential errors in experimental designs.

A common example is the use of order-of-magnitude analysis, where quantities are rounded to the nearest power of ten to quickly assess relative sizes. Another approach is the use of heuristics or empirical rules, such as the "rule of thumb," which provide practical approximations based on experience.
