Absaugkürettage

Absaugkürettage, often referred to as suction curettage, is a medical procedure used primarily for the termination of pregnancy and for the removal of uterine contents after a miscarriage or abortion. It is also employed to diagnose or treat certain uterine conditions, such as endometrial hyperplasia or polyps. The procedure involves the use of a suction device to gently remove tissue from the uterus.

Before the procedure, a local anesthetic or sedation may be administered to minimize discomfort. The cervix is typically dilated using small dilators to allow for the insertion of a thin, hollow tube called a cannula. This cannula is then attached to a vacuum source. The physician or healthcare provider inserts the cannula into the uterus and moves it back and forth to suction out the uterine lining and any contents. The procedure is generally quick, often taking only a few minutes.

Following the absaugkürettage, some cramping and vaginal bleeding are normal. Pain management with over-the-counter medications is usually sufficient. Potential risks, though uncommon, include infection, uterine perforation, or incomplete removal of tissue, which might necessitate a repeat procedure. Absaugkürettage is considered a safe and effective method for its intended purposes when performed by trained medical professionals. It is an alternative to other methods of uterine evacuation, such as surgical curettage using a sharp instrument, and is often preferred due to its less invasive nature and reduced risk of uterine scarring.
