Abrechnungspolitik

It encompasses the processes for invoicing timing, payment terms, price adjustments, discounts, rebates, and handling of returns, credits, and refunds. The policy also defines how payments are processed, how disputes are resolved, and how data related to billing is stored and protected.

Scope and components include invoicing channels (electronic or paper), frequency of invoicing, eligibility and administration of early payment discounts or volume-based rebates, and the treatment of taxes such as VAT or GST. It covers credit management, including credit checks, provisions for bad debts, and procedures for write-offs. The policy describes currency handling for international transactions, dispute management, and documentation requirements to ensure auditability and compliance.

Relation to accounting standards is an important aspect. Abrechnungspolitik should align with relevant revenue recognition frameworks such as IFRS 15 or ASC 606, which govern how and when revenue is recognized and how variable consideration is accounted for. In jurisdictions with statutory accounting rules, national standards like HGB in Germany may also apply. The policy typically forms part of broader financial or internal control policies and is subject to approval by management and oversight by internal audit.
