Abendmesse

Abendmesse, literally “Evening Mass,” is a term used in German-speaking Catholic communities for the Eucharistic celebration held in the evening. It is not a separate rite, but a scheduling variant of the Roman Rite Mass. The name reflects the time of day rather than a distinct theological form; in Latin usage the corresponding term is Missa vespertina.

Typically the Abendmesse is scheduled after the late afternoon hours and may take place in the early evening, often between about 5 and 7 p.m., though exact times vary by parish and season. In some locales it may be the regular daily Mass, especially on weekdays, while on others it serves as an alternative to an earlier afternoon or midday liturgy. On Sundays and feast days the evening Mass may be part of the standard liturgical pattern rather than a special service.

The structure of the Abendmesse follows the standard Roman Rite Mass: Introductory Rites, Liturgy of the Word (including readings, psalm, and prayers of the faithful), and Liturgy of the Eucharist (including the Eucharistic prayer and communion). Music, hymns, and possibly a homily are adapted to the evening setting. The exact rubrics and local customs may vary by diocese and parish.

In practice, the term helps distinguish the time of the celebration from morning or afternoon Masses. It is mainly a regional designation within the Catholic tradition and is sometimes contrasted with the separate service of Vespers, which is a Liturgy of the Hours rather than a Eucharistic celebration.
