Eucharistic

Eucharistic is an adjective used in Christian contexts to denote things related to the Eucharist, the sacrament commemorating Jesus Christ’s Last Supper. The term derives from the Greek eucharistia, meaning thanksgiving.

In many Christian traditions, the Eucharist—also called Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper—forms the central act of worship. The word Eucharistic appears in reference to liturgical rites, prayers, and devotional practices surrounding the sacrament. Common usages include Eucharistic liturgy or Eucharistic prayer, the Eucharistic elements (bread and wine), and Eucharistic adoration or devotion, which venerates the consecrated host outside of the Eucharistic celebration. Some denominations observe a Eucharistic fast, restricting eating or drinking in advance of communion.

Theological interpretations of the Eucharist vary. In Roman Catholic and many Orthodox churches, doctrines of real presence are central, with differing formulations about how Christ is believed to be present in the elements. Many Anglican and some Lutheran communities also affirm a form of real presence, while numerous Reformed and Protestant groups emphasize a memorial or symbolic understanding. Despite differences, all typically regard the Eucharist as a significant act of worship, thanksgiving, and communion among the church community.

The term also appears in ecumenical and pastoral contexts, such as discussions of Eucharistic hospitality and intercommunion, where churches consider shared worship and communion practices. Overall, Eucharistic describes anything pertaining to this widely observed Christian sacrament and its related rites and beliefs.
