Aastianpesijät, often translated as "dishwashers" or "dishwashing machines," are appliances designed to clean tableware, cutlery, and cooking utensils automatically. These machines significantly reduce the labor involved in manual dishwashing and are a common fixture in modern kitchens.

The basic operation of a dishwasher involves spraying hot water and detergent onto the dishes. The water is typically heated within the machine, and a pump circulates it through spray arms, which rotate to ensure all surfaces are reached. Detergent is dispensed at a specific point in the cycle to aid in breaking down food particles and grease. After washing, the dishes are rinsed with clean hot water, and a drying phase usually follows, often using heated air or the residual heat from the water.

Dishwashers vary in size, capacity, and features. Common cycles include normal wash, heavy-duty for tougher stains, delicate for glassware, and quick wash for lightly soiled items. Some models also offer options like sanitizing rinses, energy-saving modes, and delay starts. The efficiency of a dishwasher is often measured by its energy and water consumption. Modern dishwashers are designed to be significantly more water-efficient than washing dishes by hand, especially when running full loads.

The invention of the automatic dishwasher is generally credited to Josephine Cochrane in 1886, though earlier, less practical versions existed. Commercial models became available first, with household models gaining popularity in the mid-20th century as technology advanced and household incomes rose. Today, they are considered a standard appliance in many parts of the world, contributing to convenience and hygiene in domestic settings.
