AVreceivere is a term used to describe a class of consumer electronics devices that function as central hubs for audio and video in home entertainment systems. In practice, an AVreceivere integrates an audio amplifier, a preamplifier, a video switcher, and often a digital signal processor, enabling multiple audio and video sources to be routed to one or more outputs for listening and watching.

Core functions include decoding multichannel surround formats such as Dolby Digital and DTS, distributing amplified signals to speakers, handling loudspeaker protection and impedance matching, and providing volume control and tone correction. Many models also perform video processing, upscaling, and passthrough of high-definition signals to displays.

Common configurations range from stereo receivers to multi-channel units, typically described by channel count (for example 5.1 or 7.1) and with options for two zones or multi-room audio. Modern AVreceivere units often feature room-calibration systems to optimize sound for the listening space.
