ATEXcertified refers to equipment and protective systems that have been evaluated and certified for use in potentially explosive atmospheres under the European Union’s ATEX directives. The certification indicates that the product meets the safety and performance requirements established to reduce the risk of ignition in gas or dust environments and is intended for sale and use within the EU with an accompanying CE conformity marking.

The ATEX framework covers a wide range of products, including electrical and non-electrical equipment, protective systems, and devices used in hazardous areas. It applies to equipment intended for use where there is a risk of explosion due to flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dust. The directives specify the essential health and safety requirements and the procedures for demonstrating conformity.

Certification is carried out by a Notified Body designated by an EU member state. The process typically involves an assessment of the manufacturer's technical documentation, risk analysis, and product testing, possibly followed by a type examination and a production quality assurance route. Successful assessment results in an EC declaration of conformity and an ATEX/Ex certificate, enabling the manufacturer to affix the ATEX marking to the product.

Manufacturers remain responsible for ongoing compliance, with post-market surveillance and potential re-evaluation required if design or production changes occur. While ATEXcertified products are ready for EU markets, additional certifications (for example, IECEx or regional approvals) may be pursued for broader international use.
