AM radiolähetys refers to Amplitude Modulation radio broadcasting. In this method of broadcasting, the amplitude of the carrier wave is varied in accordance with the amplitude of the signal to be transmitted. This is in contrast to Frequency Modulation (FM) broadcasting, where the frequency of the carrier wave is varied. AM radio technology is older and simpler to implement than FM technology, making it a cost-effective solution for wide-area coverage.

AM signals can travel longer distances than FM signals, especially at night, due to the way they interact with the Earth's ionosphere. This characteristic made AM radio the primary means of long-distance communication and broadcasting for much of the 20th century. The quality of AM sound is generally considered to be lower than FM, with a narrower frequency response and susceptibility to static and interference from electrical sources.

Despite the rise of FM and digital broadcasting, AM radio continues to be used for various purposes, including talk radio, news, and religious programming. Its ability to cover large geographical areas with relatively inexpensive equipment makes it suitable for remote regions and for emergency broadcasts. The development of digital AM technologies aims to improve sound quality and reduce interference, potentially extending its relevance in the modern broadcasting landscape.
