AMARGs

AMARG, also known as the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group or the Davis-Monthan Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center, is a United States Air Force (USAF) facility located in Tucson, Arizona. The facility serves as a storage depot for military aircraft and vehicles, primarily those no longer in service or awaiting major overhaul.

Established in 1946, AMARG began as a military aircraft salvage facility. Over the years, its mission has expanded to include storage, demilitarization, and disposal of military equipment. The facility is capable of storing over 4,000 aircraft and 1,000 motorized vehicles. Its vault-like structures, called "boneyards," provide a secure and environmentally controlled space to store these items.

The items stored at AMARG are typically those awaiting preservation or disposal. This can include aircraft that require long-term storage, such as those damaged in combat or slated for retirement. Some items are stored with the intention of eventual reuse or resale. In 2008, the USAF began receiving Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft at AMARG, where they were prepared for long-term storage.

Operating under the auspices of the Air Force's Remotely Piloted Vehicle Program, AMARG stores drones and unmanned combat systems, including the MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper. This facility is one of several storage depots operated by the Air Force. AMARG provides a critical service by keeping aircraft and military vehicles in reserve, serving as a backup, or training and testing facility when needed.
