AICDmediated

AICDmediated refers to a biological process or phenomenon that is influenced or caused by the AICD protein. AICD is the Amyloid Precursor Protein Intracellular Domain, a peptide fragment derived from the larger Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP). APP is a transmembrane protein involved in various cellular functions, including neuronal growth and repair.

The generation of AICD occurs through sequential proteolytic cleavage of APP by secretase enzymes. Specifically, gamma-secretase cleaves APP within its transmembrane domain, releasing the AICD fragment into the cytoplasm. Once released, AICD can translocate to the nucleus.

In the nucleus, AICD has been shown to interact with various transcription factors and co-regulators, thereby influencing gene expression. This interaction can modulate the transcription of genes involved in a range of cellular processes, such as learning, memory, synaptic plasticity, and cell survival. The precise mechanisms and downstream targets of AICD-mediated gene regulation are still under active investigation.

Dysregulation of APP processing and subsequent AICD generation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease. While beta-amyloid plaques are a hallmark of Alzheimer's, the role of AICD in neuronal dysfunction and cognitive decline is an area of ongoing research.
