AENA

AENA, or Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea, S.A., is a Spanish public company that operates civil airports and provides air navigation services. It was established in 1991 as part of a reform of Spain’s aviation infrastructure to centralize the management of airports and air traffic control. The company is headquartered in Madrid.

Since 2015, AENA has been listed on the stock market, although the Spanish government has retained a controlling stake. The organization functions as the main operator of Spain’s civil airport network and as the national provider of en route air traffic services, overseeing safety and efficiency across Spanish airspace and at major airport facilities.

Operations in Spain include the management of most of the country’s major airports, such as Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez, Barcelona–El Prat, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga, Alicante, and others. Beyond airport management, AENA coordinates air traffic services and related infrastructure, contributing to the overall performance of Spain’s aviation sector.

AENA also maintains an international footprint through airport concessions and joint ventures, holding stakes in airports outside Spain and providing related services through its international portfolio. The company’s activities are subject to regulation by Spanish aviation authorities and European Union rules on competition and aviation safety.

Strategically, AENA focuses on modernization and expansion of capacity, digitalization, customer experience, and sustainability, including measures related to noise management and emissions reduction, in line with broader European aviation objectives.
