AEDkészülékek, or Automated External Defibrillators, are portable electronic devices designed to analyze a person's heart rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electric shock (defibrillation) to restore a normal heartbeat. These devices are crucial for treating sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), a life-threatening condition where the heart suddenly stops beating effectively.

AEDs are engineered for ease of use by the general public, not just medical professionals. They typically feature clear, voice-guided instructions and visual prompts that guide the user through the entire process, from attaching the electrode pads to the patient's chest to delivering the shock. This user-friendly design aims to empower bystanders to intervene quickly and effectively in emergency situations.

When an AED is turned on, it analyzes the patient's heart rhythm. If it detects a shockable rhythm, such as ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia, it will advise the operator to deliver a shock. The device automatically charges and prompts the user to press a button to administer the shock. If the rhythm is not shockable, the AED will advise continuing CPR.

The widespread availability of AEDs in public spaces like airports, shopping malls, schools, and workplaces significantly increases the chances of survival for individuals experiencing SCA. Early defibrillation, combined with effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), is the most critical factor in improving outcomes for SCA victims. Prompt access to an AED can reduce the time to defibrillation from many minutes to mere moments, dramatically improving the victim's prognosis.
