The 900s refers to the years from 900 to 999 CE, a decade often treated as part of the broader 10th century in world history. It was a period of political reorganization, cultural flourishing, and ongoing military conflict across multiple regions after the disruptions of the late 9th century.

In Western Europe, the fragmentation that followed the collapse of the Carolingian Empire continued to shape state formation. In 911 the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte granted Rollo and his Norse followers the land that would become Normandy. The Magyar raids into Central Europe culminated with their defeat at Lechfeld in 955, after which their political integration began. By 962 Otto I of East Francia was crowned Holy Roman Emperor, a development that strengthened German-centered imperial authority. In 987 Hugh Capet became king of West Francia, laying the groundwork for the Capetian dynasty. In 988 the Rus' adopted Christianity under Grand Prince Vladimir, a turning point for the region.

Across Africa and beyond, long-distance trade linked the Sahara and sub-Saharan regions with North Africa and the Mediterranean. The 900s also saw ongoing cultural and scholarly activity within the broader Afro-Eurasian world, including manuscript transmission, religious reforms, and architectural projects that reflected a growing interregional exchange.
