The 74HC4511 is a high-speed CMOS BCD-to-seven-segment decoder/driver with latch functionality, part of the 74HC logic family. It accepts a 4-bit binary-coded decimal input and provides seven outputs that drive a standard seven-segment LED display. The device is designed to work with common-anode displays by sinking current through the segment outputs, while the anodes are connected to a positive supply via current-limiting resistors.

Key features include a latch enable input (LE) that holds the current decoded pattern, a lamp test input (LT) to illuminate all segments for testing, and a blanking input (BI) to blank the display. When BI is asserted appropriately, the outputs can be forced off; LT, when activated, lights all segments. The LE input allows the displayed digit to be held constant while the BCD input may change, enabling simple display control in multiplexed or time-mliced arrangements. The device maps BCD 0000 through 1001 (0–9) to the corresponding segment patterns; BCD values above 1001 typically produce blank or undefined outputs.

Electrical and package considerations are typical of the 74HC family: the device operates from a supply range of about 2 to 6 volts, with a recommended operation near 5 V. It features CMOS inputs and outputs with moderate power consumption and is available in standard packages such as DIP-14 and small-outline formats. In use, appropriate current-limiting resistors are required for the LED segments.
