It was discovered on 15 January 2000 by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project at the Lincoln Laboratory's Experimental Test Site in Socorro, New Mexico. The asteroid was first observed at the observatory’s Schmidt telescope, and its data were subsequently submitted to the Minor Planet Center. Its provisional designation, 2000 BS_2, was later replaced by the permanent number 56533 when its orbit became reliably determined.

56533 orbits the Sun in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Its semi-major axis is approximately 2.717 astronomical units, with an orbital period of 4.48 Earth years. The orbit has a modest eccentricity of 0.15 and an inclination of 5.2 degrees relative to the ecliptic plane. As of the latest ephemeris, the asteroid's aphelion and perihelion distances are 3.15 AU and 2.28 AU, respectively. The Jovian perturbations are insignificant due to its location well outside the 3:1 resonance region.

Spectroscopic observations suggest that 56533 belongs to the S-type taxonomic class, indicating a silicate-rich surface composition. Estimates based on its absolute magnitude (H ≈ 15.2) and assumed albedo (p ≈ 0.20) imply a diameter of roughly 5 kilometers. No spacecraft encounters or apparitions within 0.1 AU of Earth have been recorded; the asteroid remains a typical main-belt object with no cometary activity. Its straightforward orbit and modest size make 56533 a representative member of the inner main-belt population, contributing to the statistical studies of asteroid families and collisional processes.
