It was discovered on 15 January 2000 by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project at the Lincoln Laboratory's Experimental Test Site in Socorro, New Mexico. The asteroid was first observed at the observatory’s Schmidt telescope, and its data were subsequently submitted to the Minor Planet Center. Its provisional designation, 2000 BS_2, was later replaced by the permanent number 56533 when its orbit became reliably determined.
