DCI 4K is defined by the Digital Cinema Initiatives standards for digital cinema projection and mastering. It is typically delivered and projected at traditional cinematic frame rates, with 24 frames per second being the standard; other rates such as 23.976 or 25 fps may appear in some workflows. The 4096×2160 frame is used to preserve more of the original film’s horizontal information than 3840×2160 Ultra HD, aiding image composition on large cinema screens.

In practice, 4096×2160 is distinguished from consumer 4K UHD by its wider aspect ratio and its role in professional cinema workflows. It is widely supported in camera, post-production, and projection pipelines that follow DCI guidelines. When shown on standard home or non-professional displays, it is often letterboxed or pillarboxed to fit the screen’s aspect ratio, unless the display or content is specifically mastered to accommodate it.

Compared with 3840×2160, 4096×2160 contains roughly 6.6% more horizontal pixels, resulting in an overall higher pixel count similar to its use in preserving cinematic framing. The resolution remains a core standard for feature-film production, archival, and certain high-end digital cinema workflows.
