3GPPSlicing

3GPPSlicing refers to the concept of network slicing as defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Network slicing allows mobile network operators to divide a single physical network infrastructure into multiple virtual end-to-end networks. Each virtual network, or "slice," is optimized to meet the specific requirements of a particular service, application, or customer. These requirements can vary significantly, encompassing aspects like latency, bandwidth, reliability, security, and connectivity.

The idea behind 3GPPSlicing is to provide tailored network capabilities without the need for dedicated physical infrastructure for each service. For instance, one slice might be designed for enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) applications requiring high data rates, while another could be configured for ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) services like autonomous driving or industrial automation. A third slice might focus on massive machine-type communication (mMTC) for a vast number of low-power IoT devices.

3GPP standards define the architecture and mechanisms necessary to enable network slicing, including aspects like resource isolation, slice management, and end-to-end service orchestration. This technology is a key enabler for 5G networks, allowing them to support a diverse range of use cases and business models by offering flexible and programmable network resources. By partitioning the network, operators can ensure that the performance of one slice does not negatively impact others, thereby guaranteeing service quality and facilitating new revenue streams.
