3Dsensointi, often translated as 3D sensing or 3D perception, refers to the process by which a device or system captures and interprets information about the three-dimensional structure of its environment. This technology allows machines to understand depth, shape, and spatial relationships, moving beyond two-dimensional imaging.

Various methods are employed for 3D sensing. Time-of-flight (ToF) sensors emit light pulses and measure the time it takes for them to return after reflecting off objects, thereby calculating distance. Structured light techniques project a known pattern of light onto a scene and analyze how the pattern deforms to infer depth. Stereo vision uses two or more cameras to simulate human binocular vision, calculating depth by triangulating corresponding points in multiple images. Another approach is active triangulation, which uses a laser or other light source to project a line or point, and a camera to observe its position, again allowing for depth calculation.

The applications of 3D sensing are widespread and continue to expand. In robotics, it enables navigation, obstacle avoidance, and manipulation. In augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), 3D sensing is crucial for accurately mapping the user's surroundings and integrating virtual objects realistically. It also plays a significant role in industrial automation for quality control and assembly, as well as in autonomous vehicles for environment perception. Medical imaging, 3D printing, and security systems also leverage 3D sensing technologies.
