3Dmonolithic is a term used to describe the production of three-dimensional objects as single, uninterrupted pieces—monoliths—in contrast to assemblies made from multiple parts. The term appears in discussions of design, manufacturing, and additive manufacturing to emphasize the absence of joints that join separate components. In practice, 3Dmonolithic parts are produced in one build or one continuous process and rely on material properties, build strategies, and design techniques to maintain integrity across the whole volume.

In additive manufacturing, achieving a truly monolithic part often requires careful control of build orientation, wall thickness, support structures, and post-processing. The approach can reduce assembly steps, improve structural continuity, and simplify internal channels or housings, but may impose limits on size, geometry, and material anisotropy. Materials commonly used include polymers for FDM and SLA, and metals for SLS and DMLS, each with trade-offs in strength, surface finish, and thermal behavior.

Applications span consumer electronics housings, aerospace and automotive components, medical devices, sculpture, and prototyping. Designers may favor monolithic designs to minimize leak paths, fasteners, and joints, while engineers weigh manufacturability against performance requirements.
