3Dkiteet

3Dkiteet is a term used to describe a class of small, kite-like aerial devices designed for low-cost wind energy research and environmental sensing. The name combines 3D printing, which is commonly used to fabricate its structural parts, with the kite concept for lift.

Design and construction: Most implementations use a lightweight 3D-printed frame, a wing or sail to generate lift, a tail for stability, and a tether with electrical power lines and a data link. Payloads include microcontrollers, sensor suites (temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed), and optional energy storage or a tiny generator.

Operation: Launched from a ground station with a winch, the altitude is controlled by pulling in or paying out the tether. Flight is largely passive, aided by stable wing geometry and a simple tail. Data are logged locally or transmitted via the tether.

Applications: Used in education, environmental monitoring, and atmospheric research, 3Dkiteet devices offer a low-cost platform for wind-energy demonstrations and outdoor sensing.

History and development: 3Dkiteet originated in maker and open-hardware communities during the 2010s as a cost-effective alternative to traditional micro-drones. There is no single standard; designs vary in scale, materials, and sensor payloads.
