At standard temperature and pressure, it exists as a colorless, odorless gas. Nitrogen gas is the most abundant component of Earth's atmosphere, making up approximately 78% by volume. It is a relatively inert gas due to the strong triple bond between the two nitrogen atoms, which requires a significant amount of energy to break.

Despite its inertness in its gaseous form, nitrogen is an essential element for all living organisms. It is a key component of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, and nucleic acids, such as DNA and RNA, which carry genetic information. Nitrogen cycles through the environment in various forms, including atmospheric nitrogen gas, ammonia, nitrates, and organic nitrogen compounds. Nitrogen fixation, a process carried out by certain bacteria, converts atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms.

Nitrogen has numerous industrial applications. It is used in the production of fertilizers, which are crucial for agriculture. Liquid nitrogen, due to its extremely low temperature, is widely used as a refrigerant for preserving biological samples, in cryogenic applications, and in the food industry for rapid freezing.
