The compound is typically prepared by acid-catalyzed acetalization of acetone with methanol. In practice, acetone and an excess of methanol are heated in the presence of a catalytic acid such as p-toluenesulfonic acid or sulfuric acid, with water removal to drive the equilibrium toward acetal formation. The reaction is reversible, and hydrolysis under acidic conditions regenerates acetone and methanol.
