The discovery was made using a 1.0-meter reflecting telescope. The minor planet was designated 20921 and later named "1998 TY2" in accordance with the International Astronomical Union's (IAU) naming conventions for minor planets.

The orbital characteristics of 20921 indicate that it is a member of the Flora family of asteroids, which is one of the largest groups of stony asteroids in the main belt. The Flora family is believed to have originated from a collisional event that occurred approximately 80 million years ago.
