It was discovered on 14 October 1998, by astronomers of the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project at the Lincoln Laboratory's Experimental Test Site near Socorro, New Mexico. The discovery was made using a 1.0-meter reflecting telescope. The minor planet was designated 20921 and later named "1998 TY2" in accordance with the International Astronomical Union's (IAU) naming conventions for minor planets.
