1parameter

1parameter is a term used across mathematics and the sciences to denote a structure described by a single parameter. In general, a 1parameter family consists of objects F(t) indexed by t from an interval in the real or complex numbers, where changing t deforms or selects members of the family in a continuous way.

In mathematics, a common example is a family of functions y = f(x; t) depending on t. Another example is a family of geometric objects parameterized by t, such as curves defined by equations F(x, y; t) = 0. The parameter t controls the variation within the family and can often be interpreted as time, a shape modifier, or a scale factor.

In Lie theory and differential geometry, a 1parameter subgroup is a map t -> g(t) from the real numbers into a Lie group G, with g(0) = e and g(s + t) = g(s)g(t). The derivative at t = 0 yields an element of the Lie algebra, and many such subgroups are expressed as g(t) = exp(tX) for some X in the algebra. This framework links one-parameter variation to continuous symmetries and conservation laws.

In statistics and probability, a one-parameter model uses a single parameter θ to describe a family of distributions. Examples include the Poisson distribution with rate λ, or the exponential distribution with rate λ. The likelihood, moments, and other properties depend on this single parameter.

In physics, continuous transformations generated by a single parameter describe 1parameter groups of symmetries, such as rotations about a fixed axis, with the parameter often interpreted as an angle. In computing and optimization, a single-parameter setting refers to models or procedures tuned by one adjustable value.
