An 18-wheeler, also known as a semi-trailer truck or tractor-trailer, is a combination vehicle consisting of a prime mover (tractor unit) and one or more semi-trailers. The "18-wheeler" designation comes from the typical number of wheels found on such a configuration: two wheels on the tractor's steering axle, four wheels on its drive axles (two axles with dual wheels on each side), and ten wheels on the semi-trailer (two wheels on its front axle, and four wheels on each of its two rear axles).
