Öljypolttimet are devices that burn liquid fuels to generate heat for heating systems, hot water, or process heat. They are used in oil-fired boilers, furnaces, and water heaters, and are a common component in residential and industrial heating installations. The term is widely used in Finnish and Scandinavian contexts to describe burners designed to consume light and sometimes heavier fuel oils.

Most öljypolttimet operate by delivering fuel under pressure to a nozzle, where it is finely atomized and mixed with air before ignition in a combustion chamber. The burner is controlled by a system that modulates fuel and air to maintain stable flame, optimize efficiency, and prevent flame failure. An ignition source, typically an electric spark or hot-surface igniter, starts combustion, and a flame sensor confirms that the burner is burning. Exhaust and safety controls monitor pressure, temperature, and carbon monoxide levels.

Two main families are distinguished: pressure-atomizing and air-atomizing burners, each with single-stage or modulating (multi-stage) operation. Modern installations often pair oil burners with high-efficiency condensing boilers or combined systems to improve overall energy use. Some burners are designed for different fuel grades, such as light fuel oil (LFO) or heavier oils, and may include NOx reduction features for lower emissions.

Maintenance is essential for reliability and safety. Regular tasks include cleaning or replacing nozzles, inspecting ignition and flame quality, checking air filters and pumps, and testing safety devices. Proper installation and periodic servicing help maximize efficiency, minimize emissions, and ensure safe operation.
