Äänenpainetasoja, often translated as sound pressure level, is a logarithmic measure of the effective pressure of a sound relative to a reference value. It is commonly used to quantify how loud a sound is perceived. The unit for sound pressure level is the decibel (dB). The formula for calculating sound pressure level is 20 * log10(p/p0), where 'p' is the root-mean-square sound pressure and 'p0' is the reference sound pressure, typically 20 micropascals, which is the threshold of human hearing.

Sound pressure level is not a direct measure of sound energy but rather of sound pressure. However, it correlates closely with human perception of loudness. Different decibel levels correspond to various everyday sounds: a whisper might be around 30 dB, normal conversation around 60 dB, and a rock concert can reach 110 dB or more. Exposure to very high sound pressure levels for extended periods can cause hearing damage.

The logarithmic nature of the decibel scale means that a small increase in decibels represents a significant increase in sound pressure. For instance, a 10 dB increase corresponds to a tenfold increase in sound pressure and approximately a doubling of perceived loudness. Conversely, a 3 dB increase is generally perceived as a doubling of sound intensity. Understanding sound pressure levels is crucial in fields like acoustics, occupational safety, and environmental noise monitoring.
