Ülepingekaitsevahendid

Ülepingekaitsevahendid, known in English as surge protectors or surge suppressors, are devices designed to protect electrical equipment from voltage spikes. These surges, also called transients, are temporary increases in voltage above normal operating levels. They can be caused by various factors, including lightning strikes, switching operations within the power grid, and the activation of high-power appliances. Even small, frequent surges can degrade the performance and shorten the lifespan of sensitive electronics over time.

The primary function of an ülepingekaitsevahend is to divert excess voltage away from connected devices. When a voltage surge occurs, the surge protector detects the abnormal voltage. It then uses components, most commonly Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs), to create a low-resistance path to ground, effectively shunting the excess energy away from the protected equipment. This prevents the damaging overvoltage from reaching the sensitive internal components of electronics like computers, televisions, and other appliances.

Ülepingekaitsevahendid come in various forms. The most common are power strips with built-in surge protection. However, they can also be integrated into uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), or installed at the main electrical panel for whole-house protection. The effectiveness of a surge protector is often measured by its Joule rating, which indicates how much energy it can absorb before failing. Higher Joule ratings generally offer better protection. It is important to note that ülepingekaitsevahendid protect against transient overvoltages and not sustained overvoltages, which require different protective measures. Regular inspection and replacement of older or damaged surge protectors are recommended to ensure continued protection.
