Õhkvedrud, also known as air springs, are a type of spring that uses compressed air as its primary suspension medium. They are commonly found in vehicles, both for passenger comfort and to adjust ride height. Unlike conventional coil springs, which rely on the deformation of metal, air springs utilize a flexible bag or bellows that contains pressurized air. This air is typically supplied by an onboard air compressor and stored in a reservoir.

The main advantage of air springs is their adjustability. The stiffness and height of the suspension can be changed by altering the amount of air within the spring. This allows for a softer ride when cruising and a firmer setting for better handling or when carrying heavy loads. Many vehicles equipped with air springs offer different driving modes that automatically adjust the air pressure to suit the driving conditions.

Air springs are also used in industrial applications, such as in heavy machinery, vibration isolation systems, and even in some types of seats. Their ability to absorb shocks and vibrations effectively makes them valuable for protecting sensitive equipment and improving worker comfort. The design of an air spring typically involves a rubber or polyurethane bellows that expands and contracts with changes in air pressure. A piston or diaphragm within the bellows controls the movement and containment of the air. Maintenance for air spring systems can include checking for leaks and ensuring the air compressor and associated components are functioning correctly.
