Írásvédelmet, commonly translated as write protection, is a mechanism designed to prevent unauthorized or accidental modification of data. This can be implemented in various forms, from physical switches on storage media to software-based access controls.

On physical media like floppy disks, a small sliding tab would enable or disable write protection. When the tab was in the "protected" position, the drive would not be able to write new data or erase existing data. Similarly, some USB flash drives and SD cards feature a physical write-protect switch.

In software, write protection is often achieved through file system permissions or application-specific settings. Operating systems can restrict users or processes from modifying certain files or directories. For example, system files are typically write-protected to prevent accidental deletion or corruption. Applications may also offer a "read-only" mode, which effectively applies write protection to the document being edited.

The primary purpose of write protection is to ensure data integrity and security. It safeguards against accidental data loss, malware that might attempt to alter or encrypt files, and unauthorized modifications by other users. While it prevents changes, it does not prevent reading or copying of the protected data. To remove write protection, the relevant physical switch must be moved, or the software permissions must be adjusted by an authorized user.
