It encompasses a range of activities, including spoilage, overproduction, improper storage, and consumer behavior that leads to unnecessary food loss. Globally, food waste is a significant environmental and economic issue, contributing to resource inefficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste management challenges.

In Hungary and other European countries, food waste is a growing concern due to its impact on sustainability. According to estimates, approximately one-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally each year. In the European Union, households are responsible for the largest share of food waste, followed by the food service sector and retail. Common causes include overbuying, poor planning, and lack of awareness about food preservation techniques.

Efforts to reduce food waste involve multiple strategies, including better inventory management in retail and food service industries, improved packaging to extend shelf life, and consumer education on proper storage and use of perishable items. Initiatives like "too good to go," which connects consumers with businesses to purchase surplus food at discounted prices, have gained popularity in combating waste. Additionally, policies promoting food donation and composting help divert waste from landfills, reducing methane emissions and environmental harm.

Addressing food waste requires collaboration among governments, businesses, and individuals. By adopting mindful consumption habits, supporting sustainable practices, and advocating for systemic changes, stakeholders can contribute to a more efficient and sustainable food system. Reducing food waste not only alleviates pressure on natural resources but also supports food security and economic stability.
