These routines are fundamental to waste management systems in many societies, promoting resource conservation and reducing the environmental impact of landfills.

The specific routines can vary significantly depending on the municipality, region, and the types of waste being handled. Generally, they begin with the consumer separating waste at home or in public spaces into designated containers. Common categories include paper and cardboard, plastic packaging, glass, metal, food waste, and residual waste. Following collection, materials are transported to sorting facilities where they are further separated by type and quality. Once sorted, materials are sent to specialized recycling plants. Paper is pulped and reprocessed into new paper products, plastics are melted down and reformed into pellets for manufacturing, glass is crushed and melted for new glass containers, and metals are smelted for reuse. Organic waste, such as food scraps, is often treated through composting or anaerobic digestion to produce fertilizer or biogas. Residual waste, which cannot be recycled, is typically sent for incineration with energy recovery or to landfills.
