Äänivahvistimia, commonly known as amplifiers, are electronic devices that increase the power of an audio signal. This amplification allows the signal to be reproduced by a loudspeaker or other output device at a higher volume. The input signal is typically a low-voltage alternating current representing sound waves. The amplifier uses an external power source, such as a battery or mains electricity, to create a magnified replica of this input signal at its output.

There are several types of audio amplifiers, primarily categorized by their efficiency and how they operate. Class A amplifiers are known for their high fidelity and low distortion, but they are also the least efficient, dissipating significant power as heat. Class B amplifiers are more efficient, but they can introduce crossover distortion. Class AB amplifiers combine the benefits of both Class A and Class B, offering a good balance of fidelity and efficiency. More efficient but potentially less linear designs include Class C, D, and others, often used in specific applications like radio frequency amplification or digital audio.

The core component in many traditional amplifiers is a vacuum tube or a transistor, which acts as the active element controlling the flow of power from the power supply in response to the input signal. Modern amplifiers often utilize integrated circuits (ICs) for compactness and cost-effectiveness. Amplifiers are essential components in a wide range of audio equipment, including home stereo systems, musical instrument amplifiers, public address systems, and car audio. Their primary function is to bridge the gap between low-level audio sources and the power required to drive speakers effectively.
