The øyelokkmarginen, or eyelid margin, refers to the edge of the eyelid where the eyelashes grow. It is a critical anatomical feature that plays a significant role in eye health and function. The eyelid margin contains several important structures, including the meibomian glands, which produce the oily layer of the tear film, helping to prevent evaporation. It also houses the openings of the sebaceous glands and modified sweat glands (apocrine glands) at the base of the eyelashes.

The eyelid margin is lined with conjunctiva, a thin, transparent membrane that covers the inner surface of the eyelids and the white part of the eyeball. This lining is crucial for lubrication and protection. The precise alignment of the eyelid margin with the eyeball is essential for proper tear distribution and to prevent exposure of the ocular surface to the environment.

Disorders affecting the eyelid margin are common and can lead to discomfort and visual disturbances. Conditions like blepharitis, which is inflammation of the eyelid margins, can cause redness, itching, and crusting. Problems with the meibomian glands, known as meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), can disrupt tear film stability and lead to dry eye symptoms. In some cases, the eyelid margin can become inverted (entropion) or everted (ectropion), further compromising eye health and requiring medical attention. Maintaining good eyelid hygiene is often recommended to prevent or manage these conditions.
