Øyedusj is the Norwegian term for an eyewash device, a safety fixture designed to flush chemicals or other contaminants from the eyes after exposure. It is commonly installed in laboratories, industrial plants, and workplaces where there is a risk of splashes or fumes that could harm the eyes. Eyewash units provide a continuous flow of clean water to both eyes, enabling rapid dilution and removal of irritants; some installations are part of a combined safety shower.

Typical equipment consists of a wall-mounted unit with dual nozzles or eye cups, a shut-off or activation handle, and a water supply with filtration and a thermostatic mixing valve to maintain a safe temperature. The device is activated by a push handle or lever, allowing hands-free operation, and is designed to deliver a steady flow for at least 15 minutes. The recommended water temperature is generally comfortable, avoiding extremes that could cause further damage, with common targets around 16–38°C.

Placement and accessibility are governed by safety standards; eyewashes should be readily reachable and clearly marked, with unobstructed paths and a direct, low-latency activation. In many regions, standards require a minimum flow rate around 1.5 L/min (about 0.4 gallons per minute) for a 15-minute flush, as well as regular testing, maintenance, and documentation. Portable eyewash bottles exist but are supplementary to fixed units in high-risk areas.

Regulatory guidance varies by jurisdiction; in the United States, ANSI Z358.1 provides performance and testing criteria, while European guidance refers to EN 15154 or national implementations. Regular inspections, temperature checks, and staff training are essential to ensure readiness.
