Östrogene are a group of steroid hormones that play a crucial role in the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics. While primarily associated with females, males also produce and utilize estrogens. The main types of estrogen are estradiol, estrone, and estriol. Estradiol is the most potent and abundant estrogen produced during reproductive years.

The production of estrogens primarily occurs in the ovaries, but also in smaller amounts in the adrenal glands and adipose tissue. During pregnancy, the placenta becomes a major site of estrogen synthesis. These hormones are essential for the maturation of eggs in the ovaries, the thickening of the uterine lining (endometrium) in preparation for potential pregnancy, and the development of breasts.

Beyond reproductive functions, estrogens have widespread effects throughout the body. They influence bone density, cardiovascular health, skin elasticity, mood, and cognitive function. Fluctuations in estrogen levels throughout the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, and in response to aging have significant physiological consequences. For instance, the decline in estrogen levels during menopause leads to various symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and an increased risk of osteoporosis.

Synthetic estrogens are also used in medicine, most notably in hormone replacement therapy and in various forms of hormonal contraception. Understanding the complex roles and regulation of estrogens is vital for comprehending female reproductive health and a range of other physiological processes.
