Öljypäästöjä, commonly referred to as oil spills, are the release of petroleum hydrocarbons into the environment, most commonly into the oceans, but also on land. These spills can be caused by a variety of human activities, including accidents involving oil tankers, offshore drilling rigs, pipelines, and other industrial facilities. Natural oil seeps also contribute to oil pollution, but human-caused spills are typically far more significant in terms of volume and immediate impact.

The environmental consequences of oil spills can be devastating. Marine life is particularly vulnerable, with oil coating the feathers of seabirds, hindering their ability to fly and regulate body temperature, and contaminating the gills of fish and other aquatic organisms. Mammals such as whales and seals can suffer from ingestion of oil, respiratory problems, and skin irritation. The damage extends to the entire marine ecosystem, affecting food chains and habitats. On land, oil spills can contaminate soil and groundwater, harming terrestrial wildlife and making the affected areas unsuitable for vegetation.

Cleanup efforts are complex and vary depending on the size and location of the spill, as well as the type of oil. Methods include skimming the oil from the water surface, using booms to contain the spread, applying dispersants to break up the oil, and employing bioremediation techniques where microorganisms are used to break down the oil. However, completely removing all traces of oil and mitigating its long-term effects is often impossible. Prevention through stricter regulations, improved safety measures in oil transportation and extraction, and rapid response capabilities are crucial for minimizing the occurrence and impact of future oil spills.
