Öljykestävyys refers to the ability of a material to resist degradation or damage when exposed to oils and fats. This property is crucial in many industrial and domestic applications where materials come into contact with oily substances. Materials with high oil resistance maintain their structural integrity, flexibility, and chemical properties even after prolonged exposure.

The degree of oil resistance varies significantly among different materials. Polymers, such as certain types of rubber and plastics, are often engineered to possess good oil resistance. For example, nitrile rubber (NBR) is known for its excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils and fuels, making it suitable for seals, gaskets, and hoses. Other polymers like fluoropolymers (e.g., Viton) offer even higher resistance, including to a wider range of chemicals and higher temperatures.

Testing for oil resistance typically involves immersing a material sample in a specific type of oil at a controlled temperature for a defined period. Afterward, the material is examined for changes in weight, volume, hardness, tensile strength, and elongation. These tests help determine if a material is suitable for its intended application.

Applications where oil resistance is critical include automotive components (fuel lines, O-rings), industrial machinery (seals, conveyor belts), food processing equipment (where contact with fats and oils is common), and protective clothing (aprons, gloves). Choosing a material with appropriate oil resistance ensures longevity, safety, and performance in environments where oil contamination is a factor.
