öglan

Öglan is a small metal ring or loop used as a reinforced attachment point in textiles, leather, and other materials. In Swedish, the term refers to this fastening feature and is comparable to the English words eyelet or eye ring. Öglan serves to guide, anchor, or connect cords, straps, or hardware and helps prevent tearing around holes.

Construction and installation vary. Eyelets are typically formed from metal by bending or stamping into a ring and then fastened to fabric, leather, or other substrates. They can be sewn around a punched hole, riveted through the ring, or secured with a crimped washer or ferrule to distribute load. Some versions combine a metal ring with a separate washer or collar, known as a grommet, to reinforce the hole and protect against abrasion.

Materials range from brass, steel, and stainless steel to plastics and composites, chosen for strength, corrosion resistance, or cost. Sizes span from small garment eyelets to larger rings used in industrial applications. Variants include simple eyelets, reinforced grommets, and welded or threaded loops designed for hardware attachments. In addition, strap loops and anchor eyes on bags, tents, belts, and harnesses are commonly referred to as öglan.
