Behaviorism, one of the earliest major learning theories, posits that learning occurs through observable behaviors and interactions with the environment. Key figures like Ivan Pavlov and B.F. Skinner explored concepts such as classical and operant conditioning, where learning is a result of stimulus-response associations and reinforcement.

Cognitivism emerged as a response to behaviorism, focusing on the internal mental processes involved in learning. This perspective emphasizes memory, attention, problem-solving, and the way information is organized and understood. Jean Piaget's stages of cognitive development and Jerome Bruner's theories on discovery learning are prominent examples within this school of thought.

Constructivism, a more recent and influential theory, suggests that learners actively construct their own knowledge and understanding through experiences and reflection. It highlights the importance of social interaction and personal interpretation in the learning process. Lev Vygotsky's work on the zone of proximal development and social constructivism is highly regarded.

Other significant learning theories include connectivism, which addresses learning in the digital age and the importance of networked knowledge, and experiential learning, which stresses the role of reflection on doing.
