An õlitussüsteem, or lubrication system, is a crucial component in many mechanical devices, particularly engines, to reduce friction and wear between moving parts. The primary function is to deliver a thin film of lubricant, typically oil, to surfaces that are in contact and experiencing relative motion. This oil film prevents direct metal-to-metal contact, which would otherwise lead to rapid degradation, heat generation, and eventual failure.

The basic operation of an õlitussüsteem involves a reservoir to hold the lubricating fluid, a pump to circulate the oil under pressure, and a network of passages or conduits to direct the oil to the points where it is needed. Filters are usually integrated into the system to remove contaminants such as dirt, metal particles, and combustion byproducts that can damage the engine. Cooling mechanisms may also be part of the system, as the friction reduction process itself generates some heat, and the oil helps to dissipate this heat away from critical components.

Different types of õlitussüsteem exist depending on the application. In internal combustion engines, for instance, a wet sump system stores the oil in a pan beneath the engine, while a dry sump system uses a separate tank. The design and complexity of an õlitussüsteem are tailored to the specific operating conditions and requirements of the machinery it serves, ensuring longevity and optimal performance.
