Észterképzés, also known as esterification, is a chemical reaction in which an ester is formed. This typically involves the reaction of a carboxylic acid with an alcohol. The general equation for this reaction is:

RCOOH + R'OH <=> RCOOR' + H2O

Where RCOOH represents a carboxylic acid, R'OH represents an alcohol, RCOOR' represents the ester, and H2O represents water. This reaction is often catalyzed by a strong acid, such as sulfuric acid, to increase the rate of reaction. The process is reversible, meaning that the ester can also be hydrolyzed back into its constituent carboxylic acid and alcohol in the presence of water, especially under acidic or basic conditions.

Esters are important organic compounds with a wide range of applications. Many esters are known for their pleasant, fruity aromas and are used as artificial flavorings and fragrances in perfumes, cosmetics, and food products. Biodiesel, a renewable fuel, is produced through the transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fats, which involves the reaction of triglycerides with an alcohol to form fatty acid methyl or ethyl esters and glycerol.
