Ääniympäristö, or soundscape in English, refers to the entirety of sounds that humans and other living beings experience in a particular environment. It encompasses all acoustic phenomena, both natural and man-made, and is a crucial element of our perception of the world. A soundscape is not simply a collection of individual sounds but rather the way these sounds are organized and perceived within a given context.

The study of soundscapes, known as soundscape ecology, examines how sounds influence human well-being, animal behavior, and ecological processes. Key components of a soundscape often include biophony, which are the sounds produced by non-human organisms like birds, insects, and mammals; geophony, which are natural sounds not produced by living organisms, such as wind, rain, and flowing water; and anthrophony, which are sounds produced by human activities, including traffic, speech, music, and industrial noise.

Understanding and analyzing soundscapes can reveal a great deal about the health and character of an environment. For instance, a rich and varied biophony might indicate a thriving ecosystem, while an overwhelming presence of anthrophony could suggest significant human impact and potential noise pollution. Efforts to manage and improve soundscapes, often referred to as soundscape design or planning, aim to create more pleasant and acoustically healthy environments for both people and wildlife. This can involve reducing unwanted noise, enhancing beneficial sounds, and preserving natural soundscapes.
