Äänityöasema, or DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), refers to a software application or a hardware device used for recording, editing, mixing, and producing audio. These systems are fundamental tools in modern music production, podcasting, film sound design, and broadcasting.

DAWs allow users to capture audio from microphones or other input sources and convert it into digital data that can be manipulated within the software. This digital audio can then be arranged, cut, copied, pasted, and layered to create complex soundscapes. Advanced editing features include pitch correction, time stretching, and the application of various audio effects such as reverb, delay, and equalization.

The mixing stage involves balancing the levels, panning, and effects of individual audio tracks to create a cohesive final product. Many DAWs also support virtual instruments, which are software synthesizers or samplers that can be played and sequenced within the workstation. This enables the creation of music without the need for physical instruments.

Hardware DAWs, while less common now than software-based solutions, typically consist of a dedicated console with built-in recording, mixing, and mastering capabilities. Software DAWs, on the other hand, run on personal computers or tablets and require an audio interface to connect microphones and other external gear. The choice between hardware and software often depends on the user's workflow preferences, budget, and the complexity of their projects.
